Tips for the Perfect Rug

One of the most difficult parts of selecting a rug is sizing! We get questions on this all the time: how big should the rug be? How close should it be to the wall? How do I make sure it will not feel too small in my space? We’ve put together a quick cheat sheet for you!

There is so much to consider when selecting a rug aside from just style (which is difficult enough in itself, right?)

Some quick tips:

- the bigger the rug, the better (usually)!

- leave at least 12 inches from the edge of the rug to the wall - you don’t want to cover up all of your beautiful tile or wood floors.

- if there is a rug that you absolutely love but is too small for the space- don’t be afraid to layer it (we love a budget-friendly jute rug layered underneath a vintage wool rug)

- think about the traffic of the space and durability of the material when selecting the rug

- don’t forget a rug pad!

High traffic spaces such as the entry door, main hallway, or living room you will want a more durable material rug such as:

- Wool

- Jute/Sisal

- Polypropylene

- Nylon

- Cotton/flat weave

These style/material rugs will still be beautiful in your home but will work better in a low traffic space.

- Plush/shag rugs

- Cut pile (this is more so the style rather than the material)

One thing I absolutely love is waking up in the morning and feeling the comfort of a rug under my feet. It is such a great way to add warmth and texture to any space. Not to mention it also is a wonderful noise reducer. Let’s talk about a couple of helpful tips for different spaces in your home.

Bedroom:

- Have at least one foot of rug space from the end of the bed/bench (if you have one) to the edge of the rug

- If your rug does not go under your nightstands try to leave about 8-10” in between the rug and nightstand for an equal balance

Dining Room:

- All your chairs/benches should sit on the rug

- Allow room to pull out dining chairs - typically one foot minimum

Living Room:

- All the front legs of your furniture should be on top of the rug

- You want at least 6 inches of extra rug off the edge of each piece of furniture
